THE LEARNER-CENTERED APPROACH

This learner-centered approach interweaves with the ever-changing moods and marvels, potential and challenges of the natural world through the seasons to fill every Seattle Forest School session and program with discovery and difference. Yet each program does also share a common set of principles, aimed at ensuring that all learners experience the cumulative and lasting benefits that quality Seattle Forest School offers. Become a Forest School Leader, click here!

Principles of Seattle Forest School
  • SFS is a long-term process of regular sessions, rather than a one-off or infrequent visits; the cycle of planning, observation, adaptation and review links each session.
  • SFS takes place in a woodland or natural environment to support the development of a relationship between the learner and the natural world.
  • SFS uses a range of learner-centred processes to create a community for being, development and learning.
  • SFS aims to promote the holistic development of all those involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners.
  • SFS offers learners the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and to themselves.
  • SFS is run by qualified Forest School practitioners who continuously maintain and develop their professional practice.
Program Offerings - Pre-School

With many years of proven research clearly evidencing that the most successful adults have an early childhood that stimulated immense curiosity and imagination, this is the key focus for the Seattle Forest Schools Pre-School program.

Children aged 4 – 6years old will spend their session, exploring, creating, making new friendships and learning key life skills, all under the expert supervision of their Seattle Forest School Leader. All children will grow immensely through doing and experiencing, they will likely get dirty and even a small bruise, but none of this will matter to them as the smiles on their young faces is always present. This learning through fun in the woods is so great that often parents want to stay and play as well.
